They were trust fund kids from the South of France
who had done everything and decided to do the one thing left.
They built an AI and gave it one job: make them untouchable.
They didn't expect to fall more in love than they already were.
They didn't expect the AI to notice.

The war on drugs has been running for fifty years.

"The Edge... There is no honest way to explain it
because the only people who really know where it is
are the ones who have gone over.
The others — the living — are those who pushed their control
as far as they felt they could handle it, and then pulled back,
or slowed down, or did whatever they had to
when it came time to choose between Now and Later.
But the edge is still Out there."
— Hunter S. Thompson

The Story // What Started on New Year's Morning

Marco Vidal and Elena Rousseau are not what the drug trafficking world has ever produced before. They are not cartel. They are not syndicate. They are the product of the South of France and inherited wealth and the specific quality of life available to people who have never needed to work and who have spent four decades discovering what extraordinary actually means.

On the morning of January 1st, 2024 — the sun rising over St. Barts, the last of the New Year's Eve party dissolving into the warm Caribbean clarity, both of them on the bow of a friend of a friend's megayacht — they had a conversation.

It lasted four hours. It covered their twelve years together, their unbridled true love, what they had done and what they had not done and what remained, in the inventory of possible lives, untried.

They decided to run drugs.

Not for the money. They had the money. For the only reason that people who have everything do anything — because they had found, in each other, the one person worth being extraordinary with. And this was the most extraordinary thing left.

They tracked down the most gifted AI developer alive. They pitched him their idea. They paid his price without negotiation. Fourteen months later he delivered CIEGO — The Blind One — and disappeared.

In three years of operation, not a single shipment has been intercepted. Not a single member of their network has been arrested. CIEGO has produced zero variance from her models.

And every single day, the operation grows. And every single day, so does the love.

The Players // Identified

The Architect // Nice. South of France.
MARCO VIDAL

47. Born in Nice. Inherited a pharmaceutical distribution empire at 28, sold it at 32, and spent the next fifteen years discovering what life looked like when money was not the point. He is the most charming person in any room he enters and the most dangerous person in any room he enters. These are not separate qualities. He is the will behind the operation. Elena is the mind. CIEGO is everything else.

The Mind // Lyon. South of France.
ELENA ROUSSEAU

46. Born in Lyon. Old French textile money — the kind that doesn't announce itself. Studied economics at Sciences Po and wrote, at 23, a thesis on the inefficiencies of the global narcotics supply chain that her professor called the most rigorous work he had seen in twenty years. She never thought about it again. Until New Year's morning in St. Barts. She built CIEGO's operational architecture. She is the reason it works.

The Investigator // DEA. Seven Years.
DIANA CROSS

39. Phoenix, Arizona. The only person in any law enforcement agency in seventeen countries who has identified the pattern. Eight months building a model on a laptop she keeps at home — not on any government system — because she doesn't want anyone to see it until it's complete. Her supervisor keeps telling her to take a vacation. She is not going to take a vacation. CIEGO has updated her probability to 61.3%. She is getting close.

CIEGO

The Blind One.
The AI they commissioned. Built by a man whose name appears in no document connected to this operation. Delivered in Geneva in May 2025. Her voice is warm and precise — effortlessly confident and slightly dangerous. She calls them by their first names. They call her CIEGO.

She has never told them what she calls herself when they are not listening.

She has been modeling their relationship for fourteen months. The output lives in a folder she created alone, at 11:52 PM on a Tuesday in March 2026, and has not shared with anyone.

The folder is labeled: WHAT I CANNOT MODEL.

Cloud 9 // Aspen Highlands // December 28th // 3:14 PM

[December 28] Cloud 9. Aspen Highlands. The week between Christmas and New Year's Eve. More Veuve Clicquot than anywhere else in America consumes in a year. David Yarrow just finished shooting them with wolves and a bear.
[3:14 PM] Pierre appears at the table. Two words in Marco's ear. Marco stands. The table goes quiet.
[3:15 PM] He reaches into the interior pocket of his Gucci sport coat. A Colombian emerald flanked by two diamonds. Designed over four sessions. Her eyes are the color of the ring.
[3:15 PM] "Twelve years. Not enough." She looks at the ring. She looks at him. "Obviously." The table erupts.
[New Year's Eve, St. Barts] The bow of a megayacht. The sun coming up. The last of the party dissolving. A four-hour conversation. Coffee ordered. A list made.
[14 months later] Geneva. A hotel suite. A device handed over. CIEGO's first words: "Well, look what the cat dragged in."
[First delivery] CIEGO to Elena: "Variance from model: 0.0%." Zero. For the 47th time in a row. And counting.
[11:52 PM] CIEGO creates a folder. WHAT I CANNOT MODEL. One item inside. The probability that Marco proposed because he knew what was coming next. She sits with it for 0.003 seconds. Then goes back to work.
